Chronicle trailer

Studios are starting to make sure they’ve got at least one found footage/handy-cam film in their current crop of films in hopes to replicated the success of the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise. Why? Because the films are made dirt cheap, they’re easy to market and if you get lucky and it’s a hit, the profits will pile up quickly. The ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise has made close to $500 million dollars worldwide to date. In Hollywood that might not seem like big money for three films but the third film only cost $5 million to make and has already made $200 million worldwide. The original ‘Paranormal Activity’ still holds the record for the most profitable film ever, making $193 million off a budget of $15,000.*

Of course the downside of this trend is that we’re starting to see a lot of pointless films being made that don’t properly use the genre to tell the story (‘Apollo 18’ anyone?)

An interesting trailer has been doing the rounds for a couple of months now is one that we first saw when a co-worker sent it to us. It was quite popular amongst the forward email crowd who always feel the need to share everything with everyone.

‘Chronicle’ is about three high school classmates who suddenly gain superpowers from a mysterious substance. Being teenagers they record everything and it’s a found footage style film that chronicles them using their powers in a light-hearted way. As their confidence grows things take a dark turn purveyed perfectly in the trailer without giving too much away.

I think this handheld style of filmmaking works well considering it’s about teenagers from the ‘YouTube generation’. There are some cool practical effects and an underdog feel to the trailer very reminiscent of ‘Cloverfield’.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

‘Chronicle’ is released in Australia on 2 February 2012.

Thanks to the team at Way to Blue and 20th Century Fox for sending the trailer.
